The Haunting Of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, 1959

Enjoyable horror novel. The supernatural phenomenons are more often suggested than really described. If we get frightened it’s because the characters get frightened. The really not new “haunted house” trope is treated originally though. The house is supposedly evil, the first owner seems to have been particularly deranged. The house appears to temper with the characters’ feelings, emotions, minds but no ghosts ever appear, no really obvious supernatural manifestations occur. However the psyche of one character really changes. Is it an effect of the house or only the nervous breakdown of a really fragile young woman ? That question is still waiting for its answer!
